Original Nicks are created by DeLand, Florida artist Bobbi Baugh. Each sculpture begins as a traditional armature constructed of plaster, wood and wire. Each hand and face is sculpted from clay. After baking, the faces are painted with glazes by hand. No two faces are alike and each has a unique personality. Beards are created from natural fiber and painstakingly glued to each face. For the robes and coat, Bobbi searches for fabrics with an interesting mix of pattern and texture. (Or, clients may provide their own fabric swatches or color scheme ideas so that the work created is a perfect complement to their decorating theme.) The clothing is cut and sewn, dipped in an acrylic stiffening mixture, then draped over the form to dry. Finishing trim, greenery, and a bag of toys and goodies complete the work, which requires an average of thirty hours to create. The finished piece has the visual and textural variety of rich fabrics but the rigidity of a plaster or resin cast piece. |
